Pickleball for Beginners
The Villages is the pickleball capital of the world! Here's your complete beginner's guide to getting started with the fastest-growing sport in America.
What is Pickleball?
A mix of tennis, ping-pong & badminton
Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a wiffle-style ball. Easy to learn, hard to master.
Why it's perfect for The Villages
Low-impact on joints, social, and incredibly fun for all fitness levels and ages.
Singles or Doubles
Most people play doubles (2v2), which is the most common and social format.
Court size
A pickleball court is 20×44 feet — the same size as a doubles badminton court. Much smaller than tennis.
Basic Rules
Scoring
Games are played to 11 points, win by 2. Only the serving team can score a point.
The serve
Must be underhand and diagonal. The ball must clear the kitchen (non-volley zone).
The kitchen (non-volley zone)
The 7-foot zone on each side of the net. You cannot volley (hit in the air) while standing in it.
The double-bounce rule
After the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once before volleying. After that, you can volley freely.
Faults
Hitting out of bounds, into the net, or volleying from the kitchen are all faults — point goes to the other team.
Equipment You'll Need
Paddle
Beginners: a mid-range composite paddle ($40–$80) is perfect to start. Brands like Selkirk, Paddletek & Onix are popular.
Balls
Outdoor balls (harder, smaller holes) and indoor balls (softer) differ. The Villages uses outdoor balls.
Shoes
Court shoes with lateral support are important. Running shoes can work but tennis/pickleball shoes are better.
Comfortable clothing
Light, breathable athletic wear. Florida heat means moisture-wicking fabric is your friend.
Playing in The Villages
Over 200 courts
The Villages has more pickleball courts than anywhere else in the world. You're never far from a game.
Open Play
Most recreation centers offer open play sessions — show up, grab a paddle, and join a game. Very welcoming to beginners.
Free beginner clinics
The Villages recreation department often offers free or low-cost beginner clinics. Check the recreation schedule.
Pickleball clubs
Dozens of clubs cater to all skill levels. Joining a club is a great way to improve quickly and meet people.
Skill levels
Players are rated 2.0–5.0+. As a beginner you'll start around 2.0–2.5. Most open play groups are welcoming to all levels.
Tips for Your First Game
Stay out of the kitchen unless the ball bounces in it
The #1 beginner mistake. Keep your feet behind the kitchen line when volleying.
Keep the ball low over the net
High balls are easy for opponents to smash. Aim for just above the net tape.
Play the ball, not the power
Pickleball is about placement and patience, not power. Dinking (soft shots) wins more points than smashing.
Communicate with your partner
Call "mine" or "yours" — especially for balls down the middle. Talking prevents collisions and errors.
Have fun!
Everyone was a beginner once. The Villages pickleball community is famously friendly and welcoming.
